SYLLABUS

Students work on completing two stories worthy of professional publication and learn to craft a pitch letter.


Session 1: May 24 –ENTRE INTO THE DESCRIPTIVE PROCESS

a) In-class assignment---50 words
b) Introduction
c) Discussion/lecture on description an observation techniques
d) Explanation of take home assignment

Session 2: June 7, Recipe writing—THE RECIPE BASED STORY

a) In class assignment---write a recipe
b) Discussion/lecture/dissection
c) Sharing/critiques of assignment from 5/24
e) Explanation of take home assignment: Story Supporting recipe


Session 3: June 14--GOING DEEPER
a) Workshop and breakdown story from take home June 7
b)    Discussion/lecture on outlining a story
c)    In class assignment./ techniques,—begin rough outline
d)    Complete and elaborate on outline for story

Session 4: June 21 FORMING THE STORY
a)    Workshop and critique outline
b) Discussion/lecture of food essays/memoirs and other food stories
c) Assignment: Write the story 150 words

Session 5: June 28—THE PITCH
a) Workshop the story
b) Discuss pitching
c) Guest Lecturer: TBD
d) Assignment: Write a pitch letter, 2nd draft of story

Session 6:  July 12—THE MUSIC OF LANGUAGE
a)     a) Work shop pitch letter
b)    b) Work shop 2nd draft
c)     c) Discussion/lecture: Cadence, tone form
d)   d)  Assignment: 2nd Draft of story, 2nd draft pitch letter

Session 7: July 19 OFF SITE—THE FOOD REVIEW,
a)     a) Visit a food locale for the purpose of reviewing
b)   b)  Discuss the qualities of a food review on site
c)     c) Assignment: Write food review

Session 8:  July 26—THE WRAP UP
a)     a) Workshop food review
b)    b) Guest Lecturer: TBD
c)    c)  Assignment: 2nd draft food review
